Learn More →How the Calculator Works
This calculator uses the official first-aider ratios from the Safe Work Australia Model Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace (July 2019), adopted by all Australian states and territories.
The ratios are based on three risk categories:
| Risk Level | Ratio | Example Workplaces |
|---|---|---|
| Low Risk | 1 first aider per 50 workers | Offices, retail, libraries, call centres |
| High Risk | 1 first aider per 25 workers | Factories, construction, agriculture, mining |
| Remote High Risk | 1 first aider per 10 workers | Remote mining, outback stations, isolated sites |
Every workplace must have at least 1 trained first aider, regardless of size. The calculator also estimates the number of kits recommended based on the same ratios and recommends whether a dedicated first aid room is needed.
What Should Be in a Workplace First Aid Kit?
While kit contents are guidance-based (not prescribed as a fixed list) in all Australian states, the Model Code of Practice provides a suggested minimum contents list. A typical workplace first aid kit should include:
- Adhesive dressing strips (plasters) — assorted sizes
- Sterile gauze pads and non-adherent wound dressings
- Conforming bandages (5cm and 7.5cm widths)
- Triangular bandages
- Elastic crepe bandages
- Wound closure strips (butterfly strips)
- Antiseptic solution or wipes
- Disposable nitrile gloves
- Resuscitation face mask/shield
- Scissors, tweezers, and safety pins
- Instant cold packs
- Eye pads and saline eye wash
- First aid guidance leaflet or instructions
High-risk workplaces may also need burns dressings, splints, heavy-duty bandages, and additional quantities. Browse our 229+ kit templates for pre-configured kits suited to your industry.
First Aid Kit Inspection Requirements
All Australian states recommend quarterly inspections (every 90 days) as a minimum. During each inspection you should:
- Check all items are present and in sufficient quantity
- Check expiry dates on all perishable items (antiseptics, medications, saline)
- Replace any used, damaged, or expired items
- Ensure the kit is clean, accessible, and clearly labelled
- Record the inspection date, inspector name, and any actions taken
FirstAidLog automates this entire process — track expiry dates, schedule inspections, and generate audit-ready reports.
First Aid Requirements by State
While requirements are largely harmonised across Australia (92% identical), each state has its own regulator and Code of Practice. Select your state for detailed requirements:
